The Blackhawk Technical College program of fire protection technician is a flexible, hands-on/online, short-term program offered for students to prepare in the careers of Fire and EMS professional services. Through this program, students may obtain national certifications through IFSAC (International Fire Service Accreditation Congress) and NREMT (National Registry of Emergency Medical Technician). Key skills that students will develop include functioning as a team, problem-solving skills, critical thinking, fostering community relations, and adapting to stressful environments. Students may be able to find employment with fire protection while completing this program or immediately upon graduation. For the EMS track, students can be employed upon graduation or continue their studies to Advanced EMT and/or Paramedic Program studies also offered at Blackhawk. Finally, by completing this program, students will be eligible to transfer credits into an Associate's degree and/or Bachelor's degree in Fire Science and/or Emergency Management.
Upon successful completion of this technical diploma, students will be able to:
1. Apply incident management and mitigation skills to emergency incidents
2. Meet professional fire and EMS credentialing standards
3. Apply critical skills to both emergency and non-emergency situations
4. Communicate clear and effectively
